Director of Music

Markus Centola is a dedicated Church Music Director, Choir Director, Organist, and Pianist with extensive experience spanning over 20 years. Noted for his leadership, musical passion, and broad understanding of Episcopal traditions, a Connecticut native, Markus has dedicated himself to enriching the spiritual and cultural life of his hometown community in the city Hartford. His previous roles as Music Director and Organist at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Vernon, CT, and the First Congregational Church of Andover, CT, underscore his expertise in enhancing worship through choral and instrumental music.
Markus holds a Master’s and a Bachelor’s degrees in Music Theory and Piano Performance, both earned from the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford. Markus has co-founded and performed with InfiniTango Orchestra and Chat Noir Jazz Quartet, showcasing his work at prestigious venues and festivals worldwide. Markus owns and teaches at Unison Music Academy in South Windsor, CT.
Currently, Markus lives in Vernon, CT with his wife, Maria Centola, and their daughter, Sofia. All three are musicians, sharing a common love for music. Markus has a deep passion for playing the accordion, professionally collaborating with Latin, jazz, and folk groups. He also has a keen interest in the art of coffee-making, delighting in exploring the nuanced flavors of espresso.

The Choir School of Hartford

The program emphasizes age-diverse mentorship, with a goal to develop musicianship as well as community. We follow the RSCM Voice for Life curriculum, which is a series of self-paced music workbooks. The program year kicks-off in August for a week-long "Choir Course Week" where choristers rehearse, play games, go on field trips, and explore music together. The program provides: free, weekly 1/2hr piano lessons (includes a keyboard) intensive choral training solo/small ensemble opportunities exposure to a variety of choral styles and traditions development of leadership skills through mentorship regular performance experience awards for achievement Voice for Life curriculum from RSCM-America travel opportunities for special concerts and trips
